Wildlife Experience in Bandhavgarh

Every tour here takes on the spirit of an adventure mystery, making every tour in Bandhavgarh turn into a fascinating story and think of it as an adventure novel brought to life in a forest. This national park is famous for giving you the highest opportunity to spot Bengal Tigers. With the world’s highest number of tigers per square kilometre, Bandhavgarh is rightly known as the Tiger’s Paradise.

However, the forest’s ecosystem consists of more than just the tigers. The hills and forests are home to the leopards and dholes. Packs of dholes roam freely without fear. Sloth bears are also common and can be seen digging for termites. While riding, you can also encounter more elusive animals like hyenas, jackals, and civets. The grasslands are home to herds of spotted deer, sambar, nilgai, and wild boar. Watching over from the treetops are the langurs who keep watch and sound an alarm whenever a predator is close.

For bird lovers, Bandhavgarh is heaven with over 250 species, including hornbills, eagles, and paradise flycatchers. Thrill seekers can look for reptiles like pythons and monitor lizards. The presence of cobras also adds another level of danger to the place.

Nothing around this park is mundane—sometimes it’s the felt absence when a tiger chooses silence while stalking its prey to maximise the element of surprise, and sometimes it is a soft flutter of a rare bird overhead. This is a reason safaris in this park are always unique.

Bengal Tigers – Densest Population of Tigers in India

Suggested Tour-

The Bengal Tiger is the undisputed symbol of Bandhavgarh, and one of the main reasons that the park is world-famous. With the densest population of tigers in the country, one is much more likely to catch a glimpse of the elusive big cat in Bandhavgarh than at any other location in India. Wildlife lovers and photographers can be assured that Bandhavgarh is a literal paradise.

The park’s unique mix of thick sal forests, expansive grasslands, and craggy cliffs is perfect for the park’s majestic tigil predators. Tigers are frequently spotted near waterholes in the summer, lounging in the shade or stalking in the meadows. They are best observed during early morning safaris when they are usually relaxed, ambling along the jungle pathways, or vigorously plunging into the bamboo thickets, leaving behind only a swish of their striped tail.

It also has hosted such legendary tigers as Charger and Sita, whose stories are still told by the locals and guides. These legendary tigers not only ruled over the jungle but placed Bandhavgarh on the tiger tourist map.

The sensation you experience when you catch a glimpse of the tiger in Bandhavgarh transcends the simple sighting of an animal—it's a meeting with the wild energy of life; an experience that will be ingrained in your memory forever.

Leopards, Wild Dogs & Other Mammals

Suggested Tour-

While the tigers get all the limelight, there is a diverse array of other animals inhabiting Bandhavgarh's forests. In addition to tigers, leopards also reside in the area and are the most secretive inhabitants. Their hunting methods are very different from tigers because they actively seek to quietly hunt prey in rocky cliffs and thick forested areas. Although a sighting of a leopard is very rare, it is very remarkable and is described as the golden coat shining beautifully paired with the black rosette in jungle light.

The next animals are the wild dogs (dholes). These animals are known to hunt in packs and are extremely fast. They are very threatening and dangerous to any prey. It is truly an amazing sight to see wild dogs cooperating as a team to hunt a deer.

Bandhavgarh is also known for having sloth bears, often seen around dusk digging for termites or feasting on wild fruits. Old World hyenas, jackals, civets, and at times even porcupines complete the park’s nocturnal fauna. Herbivores are led by large herds of spotted deer, sambar, and nilgai at the grasslands, while the gaur or ‘Indian bison’, the biggest 'gentlemen' of the jungle, are found at the deep woods.\

Each safari is like a lottery ticket. You might leave the park hoping to see a tiger and instead see a leopard scaling a rocky hill, wild dogs chasing their prey, or a bear strolling through the forest. And that is the uniqueness of Bandhavgarh.

Rich Birdlife & Reptiles

Suggested Tour-

It’s not just the famous tigers that call Bandhavgarh their home, but the place is an absolute delight for birdwatchers and reptile enthusiasts as well. The rustling of leaves and the beautiful chirping and singing of over 250 different bird species echo through the forest. The agile Indian Paradise Flycatcher, which is known for its elongated white tail, and the majestic Crested Serpent Eagle, which soars above the forest canopy, are just a few of the many winged creatures that inhabit Bandhavgarh.

The park also shelters the dazzling Malabar Pied Hornbills, the colorful peacocks, golden orioles, vultures, and even winter-migrating ducks. Thanks to the winter-invading ducks, the forest is placed much more in bond during the winters. The bird calls at dawn greatly enhance safaris giving the visitors an audio treat along with the visual pleasures

The reptile world further enriches the experience on the forest floor. You can often find Indian rock pythons, monitor lizards, and various species of snakes including the ever-dangerous cobras. Crocodiles can be seen sunbathing near the waterholes, and the ever-so-calm turtles can be seen swimming in the streams.

All of the animals keep the ecosystems in check, which further proves that Bandhavgarh is not just the ‘Tiger Land,’ but is in fact an entire ‘Wildlife’ world. This wildlife world has animals in the skies, the trees, and the rivers, which are all humming with life.
